Position Objectives:
An employee in this class performs a range of unskilled and semi-skilled work supervising summer youth age ranges from 1st grade to 12th grade. Must be able to interact with students as role models and mentors. Work also involves assisting other counselors when needed including assisting with their grade students and daily duties. Work requires educating campers through games and explorations. Employees are subject to working in inside and outside environments, in hot weather, and hazards including exposure to loud noises, vibrations, cleaning restrooms, exposure to chemicals, fumes, odors, dusts and mists. Work is also subject to the safety standards set by the Parks and Recreation Commission. Work is performed under the daily supervision of the Athletic Program Superintendent and is reviewed for appearance, productivity, and adherence to work standards through observation, inspection, and feedback from town officials and the public.

- Mentors and models responsible behavior while leading children in summer day camp.
- Carries out plans and implements program activities that are appropriate and consistent with the RSRD values.
- Adheres to program standards, including safety and cleanliness standards.
- Follows RSRD policies and procedures and maintains positive relations with parents and other staff.
- Escorts and oversee children addressing behavioral issues, setting up and maintaining equipment. Educate campers through games and explorations while leading recreational and educational activities.
- Create weekly and daily schedules to be submitted to the Superintendent for review and approval.
Additional Duties
- Assists other counselors as needed.
- Performs related duties as required.
Minimum Requirements:
Physical Requirements
- Must be able to physically perform the basic life functions of climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, feeling, talking, and hearing.
- Must be able to perform heavy work exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally; up to 50 pounds of force frequently; and/or up to 10 pounds constantly to lift or otherwise move objects.
Recruitment & Selection Guidelines
- Possess a valid appropriate North Carolina driver's license (preferred).
- CDL License (preferred not required).
- Working knowledge of safety regulations, occupational hazards, and related safety precautions.
- Ability to understand and follow instructions.
- Ability to work independently in carrying out assignments.
- Ability to walk for extensive periods of time.
- Ability to communicate effectively with the public to respond to inquiries about town services.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, and the public.
Desirable Training and Experience:
Desirable Education and Experience
- Ability to read and write sufficiently to complete timesheets and/or forms and some experience in supervising children.
- Graduate of High School or recent College Graduate or those enrolled in a secondary education’s institution.
