Position Objectives:
Performs responsible semi-skilled work in the operation of large motorized equipment used in maintenance of distribution and collection system, street cleaning and/or collection and disposal of yard waste, furniture and appliances from curb sides.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Essential Duties and Tasks
Operates knuckle boom crane to load furniture, appliances, yard waste or other objects from curb into trucks for disposal; removes large piles of limbs and branches, construction debris, heavy furniture and appliances and places into large dump truck.
Operates a street sweeper to clean Town streets; identifies appropriate route to reduce the impact on and of traffic and to address work in an efficient way; participates in change out of brushes; dumps refuse at the land fill; crawls under truck to access inside for cleaning.
Operates a backhoe, ditch witch or other equipment to open trenches for construction or replacement of distribution and collection lines; ensures deep trenches are properly excavated and shoring boxes are correctly and safely placed in trenches; ensures trench is properly filled and compacted when work is completed.
Operates a large tractor with side arm or bush hog attachment; mows fields, rights-of-way and vacant overgrown lots; notifies supervisor for billing; works independently to cover assigned route.
Operates leaf truck to vacuum leaves from curb side.
Washes and cleans assigned equipment; performs routine servicing such as checking fluid level, tire pressure, lights; greases, changes oil and filters; may assist on more complex repairs.
May participate in and/or assist in making utility system taps, installations and repairs to distribution and collection lines, meters, meter boxes and related appurtenances.
Participates and/or assists in a variety of public works functions including driving solid waste truck, mowing, trimming, repairing streets, cleaning catch basins, and related public works functions.

Minimum Requirements:
Physical Requirements
Must be able to physically perform the basic life operational functions of climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, pushing, pulling, reaching, walking, lifting, and hearing.
Must be able to perform medium work exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally; 20 pounds of force frequently; and/or 10 pounds of force constantly to lift or otherwise move objects.
Must posses the visual acuity to operate heavy construction equipment in a safe manner.
Special Requirement
Possession of a valid North Carolina Commercial Driver's License.
Desirable Training and Experience:
Desirable Education and Experience
Graduation from high school and experience driving and/or operating heavy equipment; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
