It was a community effort that resulted in the opening of the McMillian Memorial Library in 1964 and it is a community effort that keeps it going 50 years later. Citizens felt that a library might fill the cultural void that was left with the town's loss of Flora MacDonald College. A library committee was formed. Mr. Malcolm P. McLean, successful in the trucking business made a gift of $20,000 for a building to be named for two Red Springs women who had made an impact on him in his youth. The contractor's bid was $15,617. The E.H. Alexander family donated the building site and books were purchased through donations raised by local clubs and organizations. Several of those clubs have had continuous representation on the local library board and continue to be supportive in various ways. The Town of Red Springs agreed to provide operational expenses for the library in its annual budget and has continued to do so for 50 years.
